How floatation can save us from burnout

How floatation can save us from burnout

According to a recent article in the “Forbes” magazine, cases of employee burnout is extremely common in today’s professional world.

Did you know that one million people a day miss work due to stress? A genuinely startling statistic. On the one hand, the effects of “burnout” syndrome have a huge impact on individual employees — affecting their personal life and development, their ability to take care of themselves and their families, and to lead a fulfilling life. Anyone who’s had close contact with such feelings understands the risks they pose in all areas of our daily lives.

The most common symptoms of burnout are

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Lack of focus
  • Impaired memory
  • Getting sick more often
  • Depression
  • Anxiety

A survey from Gallup of nearly 7500 full-time employees found that 23% of them feel overwhelmed at work ‘very often’ or ‘always’, and another 44% feel symptoms of “burnout” from time to time.

Our fast-paced lifestyles and excessively high demands for productivity and efficiency, which often don’t align with people’s more subtle needs for balance and rest, inevitably affect both business and the economy. They cost employers dearly, in terms of increased health care costs and loss of productivity and valuable personnel.

One way many people with burnout symptoms in Western Europe and the US deal with this problem is through sensory deprivation or ‘flotation’ therapy

A recent study done in the Netherlands among 449 people showed that flotation therapy had positive effects on physiology (e.g. lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and lower blood pressure), feelings of overall health, and productivity. Despite some initial limitations of the study, the analysis concludes that flotation can be a useful tool for stress management in addition to or instead of other methods used to date.

The unique atmosphere of the therapy, helps the floater to truly “switch off” from the outside world. A luxury, that is nearly impossible to achieve outside of the space of the float tank. The conditions of absolute silence, darkness, and total sensory deprivation give us exactly what our modern fast-paced lifestyle deprives us of daily — a connection to our inner world and an opportunity for true peace.

“It’s not the feeling inside that is strange and atypical, it’s the feeling outside.”
